Is there any better way to celebrate the first signs of fall than a trip to the local farmer’s market? I spent most of the last week basically doing a veggie fast and by the end the week had lost my will to eat.. On Sunday it occurred to me that we were starting the autumn season and that I might be able to find some local inspiration. So where does a chef go to find some culinary inspiration.. to market!
I was almost giddy leaving the house this morning. Roots is a local farmer’s market that is open year round on Tuesdays here in Manheim, PA. It offers quite the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, butcher shops, bakeries, plants, candy and so much more!
I thought it would be fun to snap a few shots of what they have to offer. I can promise that I didn’t buy the whoopie pies. I did, however, get introduced to Pawpaw fruit from Absolute Organics and did pretty well. My haul consisted of a HUGE Napa cabbage ($1.50) that I will turn into egg roll in a bowl, Spaghetti squash ($3) for a low carb baked “spaghetti” and meatball, Zucchini (less than $1) for zucchini latkes (I have a small addiction), Green Chard ($1) for a rustic Sicilian Soup, yellow peppers (2/$1.00) for stuffed peppers & butternut squash. I also got 2 loaves of black & tan bread that are GF.
